Special VotesSpecial Votes will be allowed only for people who cannot vote at a voting station where they are registered for the following reasons:Physical infirmity, disability or pregnancy.Absence from the Republic on government service.Election officers and security services members who are on duty during elections.Temporary absence from the Republic for purposes of a holiday, business, sport or education.People wishing to cast special votes must inform the IEC within 15 days after the proclamation of the election date by a hand-written letter. This letter must be sent to 260 Walker Street, Election House, Pretoria or posted to P O Box 7943, Pretoria, 0001, or faxed to 012 428 5279. The letter must state the voter’s intended absence from the RSA, his/her intention to vote; and the place where he/she will cast his/her vote. They can indicate where they will vote before leaving RSA, or at the mission abroad. The notification is checked by the Chief Executive Officer of the IEC, and the place where person wants to vote is notified. Citizens must produce their ID and passport. Only the national ballot will be issued to people voting away from the country.Casting of special votes will happen prior to election day on dates yet to be spelled out in the election timetable. In previous elections, this voting normally takes place within seven days before the real election day. Ballots cast outside the country must reach the IEC before the close of normal voting on election day. If the votes do not reach the IEC in time, no matter what the circumstances, they will not be counted.South Africans working abroad cannot vote in the elections.All 105 South African missions abroad served as special voting stations. Another 10 were added for the SA National Defence Force.
